[ARCHIVED] Flash Flood Warning Issued for Roanoke County

Flash Flood Warning

The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Roanoke County, the City of Roanoke and the City of Salem until 1:30 AM EDT Friday, August 9.

At 532 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated bands of heavy rain passing across the warned area. Between 2 and 2.5 inches of rain have fallen over the past few hours. The expected rainfall rate is 1 to 2 inches in one hour with bands approaching the area from the east. Additional rainfall amounts of 1.5 to 2.5 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.

HAZARD...Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms.

IMPACT...Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas.

Vinton...
Catawba...
Bent Mountain...
Cave Spring...
Poages Mill...

This includes the following streams and drainages for Big Bear Rock Branch, Buffalo Creek, Brake Branch, Carvin Creek and Back Creek. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.
