[ARCHIVED] Boater Notice 1/10/24: Niagara Dam Boat Barrier Broken

The Niagara canoe portage on the Roanoke River is closed until further notice due to the boat barrier being broken. Crews will make repairs once the water recedes. Signs will be posted in the vicinity of the Niagara Dam and surrounding areas advising visitors of the portage closure. Updates regarding repairs will be posted on Appalachian Power’s Claytor and Smith Mountain Facebook pages.

Heavy rain and debris over the last few days resulted in the boat barrier being broken. As a safety precaution, the Niagara canoe portage will be closed until repairs can be made. The company is currently working on a plan to make repairs to the boat barrier. Crews plan to begin repairs once Roanoke River water levels start to recede. The boat barrier is located just upstream of the Niagara Dam on the Roanoke River.
