After more than 20 years building trails, writing plans and raising money for the greenway network, Roanoke Valley Greenways and Pathfinders for Greenways announced plans for a major new trail that will connect the network to Carvins Cove!

Roanoke Valley Greenways is developing plans for 235 acres of woodland on Brushy Mountain to become a greenway and County park. The Hinchee Trail will give users access from Hanging Rock Battlefield Trail (and ultimately the Roanoke River Greenway via the Masons Cove trail) to 12,000 acres of Carvins Cove.

However, the land purchase comes at significant expense, and Pathfinders has committed all its monies from many years of fundraising. In addition, large matching grants from the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation and the Preservation Trust Fund were used to secure the property—but $50,000 is still needed to build and open the trail to the public in 2019.

If you’re interested in giving toward this project, consider a donation on March 14 for Roanoke Valley Gives Day to help open the trail!

Pathfinders for Greenways

In 1997, Pathfinders for Greenways began involving citizens and volunteers in building Roanoke Valley Greenways. Pathfinders works closely with the Greenway Commission and five localities to raise money for greenways, coordinate trail construction, train volunteers, and sponsor promotional events. Have you been on Murray Run or Wolf Creek Greenways, Mill Mountain or Carvins Cove trails? Thanks to Pathfinders for a big hand in building these. Pathfinders coordinates over 5000 hours of volunteer work every year and funds many of the little things like signs, benches, trees, and mile markers.

12th Gallop for the Greenways – May 12, 2018

The Gallop is the only race in the Valley devoted solely to raising money for the greenways (over $200,000 helped build the Roanoke River Greenway)! This year we will crown the winners of a one-mile race on Friday, May 11, 2018 as King and Queen of the Greenway.
