Fictitious Name Certificates

Effective January 1, 2020, Certificate of Assumed or Fictitious Name petitions are no longer filed with the Circuit Court. Only releases of previously filed Certificates of Assumed or Fictitious Names may be filed with a $10 release fee.

Forms

The forms necessary to register and terminate a fictitious (assumed) name may be obtained from the State Corporation Commission (State Corporation Commission Forms and Fees).

Fees

Complete the necessary forms and have all signatures acknowledged by a Notary Public or Deputy Clerk of Circuit Court for a release. Include $10 for the filing fee and additional copies are $0.50 for each page and $2 per document for certification. If you are mailing the form, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

Public Information

Fictitious name documents for businesses in Roanoke County are fully searchable in the public records room of the Office of the Clerk of Circuit Court on the second floor of the Roanoke County Courthouse. As of January 1, 2020, Fictitious Names are no longer filed with our office. Please contact the State Corporation Commission for filings after this date.
