Local History Collection

RCPL offers a variety of books in our local history and genealogy collection including colonial era Virginia records, genealogical records, and Roanoke Valley history. Collections can be found at South County, Glenvar, and Hollins.

Microfilm Reader

Use the microfilm reader at the South County Library to discover local history. Items available include:

  • Roanoke Times from August 1969 through November 2014
  • New York Times from the Civil War era and from 1967 through 2005
  • The Salem Times Register from 1951 through 1971

RCPL can request genealogical records on microfilm from Virginia and other states. Call the Reference Desk at 540-777-8782 for details.

Patrons may bring in their own microfilm or microfiche to use on the machine.

Do you have some black and white photo negatives that you want to digitize? Our scanner can do that. Do you have records on microfiche? You can view, scan, or print them.
