Roanoke County Celebrates the Oak Grove Park Improvements and Arbor Day
Roanoke County celebrated the new Oak Grove Park improvements with a ribbon cutting and Arbor Day celebration on April 27! Oak Grove Park's improvements include a new playground, pickleball court, restrooms, picnic shelter, expanded parking, asphalt trail enhancements and a new environmental education trail. Oak Grove Elementary School's After School for Kids students, Virginia Department of Forestry and Smokey the Bear helped observe the 151st anniversary of National Arbor Day. Roanoke County was selected as a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation for a 25th consecutive year. Four new shade trees were planted at Oak Grove Park with the grant funding. The Oak Grove Park improvements and shade trees further implement our Oak Grove Center Plan.
Roanoke County Recognizes the Official Opening of the Galen College of Nursing
Board of Supervisors Chair Martha Hooker spoke at the ribbon-cutting ceremony to recognize the opening of Galen College of Nursing at Metis Plaza in the Oak Grove area. Galen’s newest campus will help address the critical nursing shortage and help fill the pipeline of future nurses that will help raise the quality of care in the state. The college will expand access to quality nursing education in the area by offering a two-year Associate Degree in Nursing and for Licensed Practical Nurses wanting to pursue their RN, an LPN to ADN Bride program.
The Oak Grove Center now has its second piece of public art which is located on the Blue Eagle Credit Union building. The mural was completed by artist Jon Murrill.Learn More

Oak Grove Pedestrian Improvements Project
This project upgraded the existing Route 419/Carriage Lane/Grandin Road traffic signal with pedestrian signals and crosswalks, including ADA ramps. Construction was completed in 2023.

In 2018, Roanoke County identified the Oak Grove Center study area as an opportunity for investment due to its central location between Roanoke County, the Cities of Roanoke and Salem and for its numerous commercial businesses and vacant and undeveloped properties. The Oak Grove Center Plan will guide future decisions and actions in Oak Grove over the next 10 to 20 years. The plan explores opportunities to redevelop aging strip malls, enhance community green space and encourage mixed-use, multi-family areas.
